Abstract

Purpose. The aim of this study is to diagnose the state of the cultural sector and cultural economy in Algeria by shedding light on the key cultural sectors and areas, as well as the efforts made by Algeria to develop the cultural sector; to identify the problems and obstacles from which the sector suffers, through an analysis capable of finding proposals for sustainable solutions related to the cultural economy and ways of developing it.

Results. The results indicate that the cultural economy in Algeria faces several difficulties and obstacles that have hindered its development and, consequently, its contribution to achieving sustainable economic development, despite the significant cultural assets, both tangible and intangible. Perhaps the most prominent of these challenges are the lack of investment in the cultural sector, the weakness of cultural infrastructure, and the low awareness of the importance of the cultural economy. These challenges have led to a decline in cultural production, loss of jobs in the cultural sector, and a weakening of the competitiveness of Algerian cultural products in international markets. Therefore, practical solutions have been proposed, such as increasing government investment in the cultural sector, developing cultural infrastructure, and encouraging innovation and creativity in the cultural field.

Scientific novelty. Research related to the cultural economy in Algeria remains limited, so the current study fills this gap by diagnosing the real state of the cultural economy in Algeria and highlighting the problems that this sector suffers from. In addition, the scientific novelty of this study lies in examining how cultural goods and services contribute to economic development and social welfare; as well as in examining the economic impact of cultural activities, the value of intangible cultural heritage, the role of cultural tourism in local economies and strategies for sustainable cultural industries.

Practical value. The practical value of the study is that it highlights the importance of the cultural economy as a critical part of the Algerian economy due to its contribution to job creation, economic growth and sustainable development. Using the developed recommendations regarding mechanisms and solutions can help policymakers to design policies that can improve the cultural economy in Algeria to achieve its sustainable development goals.
